Poet Javier Sicilia's Son Murdered — Peace Movement Born
Juan Francisco Sicilia, 24, and six friends are kidnapped and murdered by a gang in Cuernavaca, Morelos, in what becomes a national symbol of civilian victimhood. His father, Javier Sicilia — one of Mexico's most prominent poets — publicly renounces poetry and dedicates himself to building a peace movement. He declares the dead's famous epitaph: 'Poetry no longer exists in me.'
