Grenade Attack on Independence Day Crowd in Morelia: 8 Killed

| Calderón (2006–2012)

On Mexico's Independence Day, two grenades are thrown into a crowd of 40,000 celebrating at Morelia's main plaza in Michoacán, killing 8 and injuring more than 100. It is the first major cartel attack deliberately targeting civilians in a public celebration. La Familia Michoacana is blamed. The attack shocks the nation and prompts Calderón to label cartel leaders 'enemies of Mexico.'
