ESA Council Reframes Europe's Gateway Contributions, Sets December Rome Ministerial

ESA's 347th Council meeting, held June 16–17, 2026, at ESA Headquarters in Paris, concluded with a reframing of Europe's Lunar Gateway contributions following NASA's March 2026 decision to pause Gateway in favor of a lunar surface base. ESA's Director of Human and Robotic Exploration said development of the Lunar I-Hab habitation module will continue through its critical design review before the agency assesses repurposing options; the Lunar View logistics/refueling module will see activities slow while retaining key deep-space technologies; and the Lunar Link communications system is being studied for use as a dedicated communications asset or integration into ESA's Moonlight lunar satellite constellation. Member states agreed to hold an Interim Council meeting at ministerial level in Rome in December 2026, where ministers are expected to define Europe's exploration roadmap for the coming years — a decision point ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher compared to the pivotal 2023 Seville Space Summit. The Council also authorized ESA to enter negotiations with potential partners on the EPIC (ESA Provided Institutional Crew) mission concept, a roughly one-month professional-astronaut mission endorsed in March 2026.
