Artemis II Crew Returns to Houston — Emotional Homecoming at JSC Hangar
After spending the night in the medical bay aboard the USS John P. Murtha recovery vessel following their April 10 splashdown off San Diego, the four Artemis II astronauts flew to Ellington Field at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston on Saturday, April 11. Hundreds of JSC employees, military officers, members of Congress, and the full NASA astronaut corps filled a hangar for a standing-ovation homecoming ceremony. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman introduced the crew to a roaring crowd. Commander Reid Wiseman gave an emotional address: 'Victor, Christina and Jeremy — we are bonded forever, and no one down here is ever going to know what the four of us just went through. This was not easy being 200,000-plus miles away from home. Like, before you launch it feels like it's the greatest dream on Earth, and when you're out there, you just want to get back to your families and your friends.' Pilot Victor Glover, visibly overcome with emotion, told the crowd: 'I have not processed what we just did and I'm afraid to start even trying.' Mission Specialist Christina Koch described seeing Earth from deep space: 'Earth was just this lifeboat hanging undisturbedly in the universe.' Canadian Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen spoke about the crew's 'joy train' concept — an attitude of solidarity and gratitude the four developed during their 10 days together — saying the mission belonged to all of humanity and encouraged people worldwide to see themselves in the accomplishment. The crew reunited with their families at the hangar before being released to begin post-flight medical reconditioning, human performance evaluations, and lunar science debriefs. NASA confirmed that Orion would be transported from Naval Base San Diego to Kennedy Space Center for a formal 30-day post-flight inspection, with a comprehensive heat shield report expected within that timeframe — data that will be critical to validating the Artemis IV crewed lunar landing schedule for 2028.
