NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine officially named the lunar return program 'Artemis,' after the Greek goddess twin sister of Apollo and goddess of the Moon. The name carried a deliberate commitment to land the first woman on the Moon. Bridenstine set 2024 as the target for the crewed lunar landing, with commercial and international partners as core elements of the architecture.
