Tren Maya Fully Completed — Sheinbaum Inaugurates Final Sections to Chetumal

| AMLO (2018–2024)

President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the final sections of the Tren Maya (sections 6–7, Escárcega to Chetumal) on December 15, 2024, completing the entire 1,554 km railway loop one year after AMLO opened the first passenger sections. The southern terminus at Chetumal, Quintana Roo — on the Belize border — completes the network across all five southeastern states. Ridership grew 74% year-on-year by mid-2025, exceeding 1.3 million passengers, but the railway was projected to lose US$314 million in the first half of 2025 alone as operational costs far exceeded fare revenues. Total project cost had ballooned from the original 150 billion pesos (~$7.4B USD) to approximately 500 billion pesos (~$27–30B USD) — a 300% overrun.
