Unexploded Ordnance Kills 1 Child, Injures 6 Others in Sangin, Helmand

Two separate unexploded-ordnance (UXO) explosions struck Sangin district, Helmand province on June 13, 2026. The first, in the Chawk Majid area, injured four children; the second, around 10:00 a.m. in the Ab Zarandi area, killed one child and injured two others. The incidents add to Afghanistan's ongoing landmine/ERW crisis — UN Mine Action recorded at least 175 people killed or injured by landmines and explosive remnants of war nationwide between January and May 2026, roughly 75% of them children, with only $3.6 million of a needed $14.5 million in clearance funding secured.
