Cowra Marks 82nd Anniversary of WWII POW Breakout with Peace Bell Ceremony

The Australian town of Cowra, New South Wales, marked the 82nd anniversary of the Cowra POW breakout on August 5, 2026, with a Peace Bell Ceremony, wreath-laying services at the former Prisoner of War Camp site and at the Australian and Japanese war graves, a performance by Japanese soprano Atsuko Aria with the St. Raphael's school choir, and morning tea at the Cowra Japanese Gardens. Before dawn on August 5, 1944, more than 1,000 Japanese prisoners of war staged one of the largest POW escapes of WWII, sounding a bugle call before charging the camp's wire; four Australian soldiers and more than 200 Japanese prisoners were killed. Cowra Breakout Association media officer Lawrance Ryan said the town became a site of 'some of the first acts of reconciliation and understanding' between Australia and Japan after the war. Japanese and Australian dignitaries, school leaders, and community representatives attended this year's commemorations, which have evolved over eight decades from mourning a wartime tragedy into a symbol of bilateral reconciliation.
