81st Anniversary of Berlin's Fall — Museum Berlin-Karlshorst Marks Surrender Site
May 2, 2026 marked the 81st anniversary of the German garrison of Berlin's surrender to Soviet forces on May 2, 1945, ending the Battle of Berlin — the final major land battle in the European theater. The Museum Berlin-Karlshorst, located in the actual building where the final Wehrmacht unconditional surrender was signed before all four Allied powers on May 8–9, 1945, held a full week of events leading up to V-E Day, including guided tours in seven languages and an immersive listening installation titled 'Reverberation 8th/9th May.' Berlin's cultural calendar designated the first week of May 2026 'Liberation Week,' with museum events open to the public. The museum's exhibition covers the final Battle of Berlin (April 16–May 2, 1945), in which Soviet forces under Marshals Zhukov and Konev committed 2.5 million troops and 6,250 tanks against the remaining German garrison. Of the approximately 300,000 German troops defending Berlin, around 22,000 were killed and 480,000 captured; Soviet casualties in the Berlin operation numbered around 81,000 killed and 280,000 wounded. The Battle of Berlin killed an estimated 125,000 German civilians and left the city in ruins. On May 2, 1945, at 3:00 PM local time, General Helmuth Weidling — commander of the Berlin Defense Area — surrendered the city to Soviet General Vasily Chuikov.
