Operation Market Garden — Airborne Assault in Netherlands
Montgomery's ambitious plan to end the war by Christmas 1944 used 35,000 paratroopers to capture bridges across the Dutch rivers, with ground forces linking them up. At Arnhem, the British 1st Airborne Division landed too far from its bridge and was surrounded; only 2,400 of 10,000 escaped. 'A bridge too far' became a byword for overreach.
