Vimy Ridge Day: Canada Marks 109th Anniversary of Battle

| World War I

Canada observed the 109th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge (April 9–12, 1917) with national and community-level ceremonies. The Royal Canadian Legion held wreath-laying events across the country, including at Williams Lake Branch 139, where Veteran Richard Dubeau reflected on the 'grim and brutal realities' of the conflict and the devastating new military technologies deployed. Mayor Jeff Leal of Peterborough noted that Vimy Ridge represents 'a defining moment in Canadian history' and a symbol of 'courage, sacrifice, and unity.' The battle, which cost over 10,600 Canadian casualties including 3,598 killed, was the first time all four Canadian Corps divisions fought together under Canadian leadership, and is widely considered Canada's 'coming of age' as a nation. The Canadian National Vimy Memorial on the ridge continues to draw visitors from around the world.
