Bulgaria Enters War on Side of Central Powers

| World War I

Bulgaria declared war on Serbia, joining the Central Powers in exchange for promises of Serbian and Greek Macedonia. Bulgarian forces joined an Austro-German offensive that overran Serbia within weeks, forcing the Serbian army on a catastrophic winter retreat through Albania to the Adriatic coast. About 155,000 Serbian soldiers and civilians perished in the retreat. The survivors were evacuated to Corfu by the French Navy and eventually reformed on the Salonika front.
