Japan Declares War on Germany

| World War I

Japan declared war on Germany, citing the Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902. Japan quickly seized German colonial possessions in the Pacific and besieged the German port of Tsingtao in China. Japan's entry expanded the war beyond Europe and set the stage for future Pacific geopolitical tensions. Germany's Pacific island colonies (Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, Caroline Islands) fell rapidly to Japanese forces.
