Romanian Football Federation Withdraws Support for Infantino's Re-Election

The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) announced Wednesday it would not back Gianni Infantino for a fourth term as FIFA president, citing the fallout from his abandoned World Cup commercial stake-sale plan and his handling of decisions in the tournament's aftermath, including deference to President Trump's public comments about players. FRF president Răzvan Burleanu said the federation had 'lost confidence' in Infantino and that 'this simply means that we will not vote for him if he does not withdraw and run in March 2027.' Romania is among a small minority of federations that had not sent FIFA a letter of support for the 2027 election; more than 200 of FIFA's 211 member associations had reportedly pledged support roughly a month earlier. Romania's withdrawal, alongside Italy's FIGC the same day, added to a growing bloc of European federations breaking with Infantino ahead of the March 18, 2027 vote in Rabat.
