Football Association of Ireland Withdraws Support for Infantino's Re-Election

| World Cup 2026

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) rescinded its earlier letter of support for Gianni Infantino's FIFA presidential re-election bid, saying "recent events have raised significant concerns regarding governance, transparency and the lack of meaningful consultation" after the collapse of Infantino's World Cup stake-sale plan. The FAI said it felt "a particular obligation to advocate for and uphold best practice" given governance difficulties it had previously overcome itself. Ireland joins Wales and England among European federations breaking with Infantino ahead of the March 18, 2027 FIFA presidential vote in Rabat (nomination deadline November 18, 2026).
