Iran Issues Formal Travel Ban to 'Hostile' Countries — World Cup Crisis Escalates
Iran's Ministry of Sports issued a formal ban on March 27 prohibiting all Iranian national and club teams from traveling to countries classified as 'hostile,' stating: 'The presence of national and club teams in countries that are considered hostile and are unable to ensure the security of Iranian athletes and team members is prohibited until further notice.' While triggered by a club football scheduling dispute, the order directly blocks Iran's three World Cup Group G matches — all scheduled at US venues (Los Angeles and Seattle). Iran's ambassador in Mexico City was reported negotiating with FIFA to relocate matches to Mexico; FIFA again rejected the request. Iran's sports minister had declared in March that Iran 'under no circumstances' could participate in the US. Six Iranian women's national team players reportedly sought asylum in Australia earlier in March after refusing to sing the national anthem.
