FIFA Confirms 48-Team Expanded Format

The FIFA Council unanimously approved the expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams beginning with the 2026 edition. The new format introduces 12 groups of four teams, with the top two from each group plus the eight best third-place finishers advancing to a Round of 32. The change adds 40 matches and extends the tournament by 7 days.
