Earthquake Death Toll Passes 6,000 as Only 16.5% of Debris Cleared

National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez announced via Telegram that the confirmed death toll from the June 24 twin earthquakes had reached 6,125 — up from 4,829 on July 15 — with 61,000 people treated in hospitals since the disaster. Rodríguez acknowledged that only 16.5% of earthquake debris had been cleared six weeks after the quakes, as residents in La Guaira and Caracas continued to criticize the pace of government and military recovery efforts. The World Bank estimated physical damage at roughly $19.6–20 billion, warning that 'build back better' reconstruction costs could reach $50 billion and that GDP could remain below pre-earthquake levels until 2036 without sufficient investment. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez secured $346 million in emergency IMF financing, alongside $300 million pledged by the US and $36.5 million from the European Commission, but the UN's $931 million humanitarian response plan for 2026 remained only 39% funded.
