AP: Government's First Nationwide Missing Estimate (1,500) Dwarfed by Independent Tallies

| Venezuela Quake

An Associated Press investigation profiling the Molina family's ten-week search for 18-year-old Andrés Molina in La Guaira reports that the Venezuelan government has, for the first time, put a nationwide figure on the missing — about 1,500 — alongside its 6,500 confirmed-dead count, and says its casualty statistics are 'rigorously verified.' Independent accounts and crowdsourced trackers put the true number of unaccounted-for people at tens of thousands, far above the official estimate. Andrés's mother and brother were recovered from their collapsed 10-story building in June; neighbors report unconfirmed sightings of him since, but he has not been found.
