Reuters/Ipsos Poll: Majority of Americans Oppose Ending Birthright Citizenship as SCOTUS Prepares April Ruling

| United States

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released April 26 found that a majority of Americans oppose the Trump administration's effort to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants born on US soil — a central plank of Trump's second-term immigration agenda. The Supreme Court, currently in its April oral argument session (April 20–29), is preparing a ruling on the administration's challenge to the 14th Amendment's citizenship clause. The administration has argued that birthright citizenship should not apply to children of undocumented immigrants or temporary visa holders, a position that would require either a constitutional amendment or a favorable Supreme Court interpretation reversing 125-plus years of precedent. The Court's ruling is expected before the June term recess. Separately, the Court has already ruled on 26 cases in the current term, and additional decisions on Fourth Amendment protections, generic drug labels, and torture/human rights claims are pending. The administration's immigration agenda also continued to face challenges in lower courts: the DOJ's record denaturalization campaign targeting nearly 400 citizens announced April 24 generated new legal challenges, and Philadelphia's new restrictions on ICE cooperation in hospitals and libraries passed into law.
