Wind-driven wildfires fueled by Hurricane Dora destroyed the historic town of Lahaina on the island of Maui, Hawaii on August 8, 2023, killing at least 102 people — the deadliest US wildfire disaster since the 1918 Cloquet Fire in Minnesota. Over 2,200 structures were destroyed. Questions arose about the delayed activation of emergency sirens, utility liability for downed power lines, and climate change's role in intensifying wildfire risk. A $4B settlement with Hawaiian Electric was reached in 2024.
