US-Led Invasion of Iraq — Saddam Falls; No WMD Found
The United States, United Kingdom, and coalition partners invaded Iraq on March 20, 2003, citing weapons of mass destruction that were never found. Baghdad fell in three weeks; Saddam Hussein was captured in December 2003. The subsequent insurgency and sectarian civil war killed 4,487 US service members and over 100,000 Iraqi civilians. The war cost an estimated $2 trillion, destabilized the Middle East, and created the conditions that gave rise to ISIS.
