Labour Leadership Nominations Close with Burnham Sole Candidate

Nominations in the 2026 Labour leadership election closed on 16 July 2026 with Andy Burnham as the only candidate, having secured 379 nominations — more than 90% of the Parliamentary Labour Party and over 80% of all Labour MPs — after every other prospective challenger declined to stand once his path became mathematically insurmountable. A special party conference is scheduled for 17 July to formally confirm Burnham as Labour leader, with his premiership expected to begin around 20 July, completing one of the fastest leadership transitions in the party's modern history and making him the UK's seventh Prime Minister in ten years.
