Andy Burnham Wins Makerfield By-Election, Returns to Parliament
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election on 18 June 2026 with 54.8% of the vote — a majority of over 9,200 — decisively beating Reform UK's Rob Kenyon and outperforming every published opinion poll, none of which had placed him above 50%. The seat was vacated on 14 May when sitting Labour MP Josh Simons resigned specifically to allow Burnham a route back into the Commons, an arrangement not seen since the 1965 Leyton by-election. Burnham's return to Parliament immediately intensified pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer, positioning Burnham as the clear frontrunner to challenge for the Labour leadership.
