Russia Launches Massive Missile-and-Drone Attack on Kyiv, Kills 15, Damages Children's Hospital
Russia launched a massive combined attack on Kyiv beginning shortly after midnight and continuing into late morning on August 20, using 44 cruise missiles, 2 Banderol missiles, 168 Shahed-type drones, and ballistic and Zircon hypersonic missiles fired from Kursk Oblast. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 39 cruise missiles, both Banderols, and 145 drones, but strikes still hit 28 locations across the city. At least 15 people were killed and roughly 40 injured, President Zelensky said. A children's hospital in the Darnytskyi district had its windows blown out and cars burning on its grounds; a kindergarten, an educational institution, warehouses, and residential buildings in the Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi, and Pechersk districts were also damaged, including a 5-story building with a fire and another building damaged between the 8th and 9th floors. In neighboring Brovary, Kyiv Oblast, 1 person was killed and 8 injured. Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters as explosions rocked the capital.
