Ukraine-Russia 500-POW Exchange Conducted; Part of First Direct Talks Agreement Since 2022 — Day 1,564

| Ukraine

On June 7–8, 2026 (Day 1,564–1,565), Ukraine and Russia conducted a major prisoner-of-war exchange, with 500 Ukrainian POWs expected to be returned as part of an agreement announced by President Zelensky on June 4. The exchange was part of a broader deal struck at the second round of direct Ukraine-Russia talks held on June 2 — the first direct negotiations between the two countries since the early days of the full-scale invasion in 2022. The overall agreement covered more than 1,000 POWs from each side, with Russia additionally pledging to return 6,000 bodies of fallen Ukrainian soldiers. A preceding swap of 185 POWs from each side had already been completed on June 5. The continued POW exchanges represented the most significant humanitarian-diplomatic progress of the 2026 diplomatic season, proceeding in parallel with ongoing military operations — including the June 7 Russian drone strike on Chornobyl and Ukrainian strikes on Crimea fuel infrastructure. Ukraine's ability to negotiate POW returns while simultaneously conducting deep-strike operations illustrated the bifurcated nature of the conflict: continued fighting accompanied by limited transactional diplomacy.
