Russia Launches Massive Attack on Kyiv — 600 Shahed Drones + 90 Missiles; 4 Killed, 80+ Injured; Every City District Hit

| Ukraine

Overnight into May 24, 2026 (Day 1,550 of Russia's full-scale invasion), Russia launched one of the war's largest attacks on Kyiv: approximately 600 Shahed-type loitering munitions and 90 missiles in a sustained overnight barrage. Ukrainian air defense intercepted most drones and more than half the missiles, but a significant number of projectiles penetrated Kyiv's defenses. At least 4 people were killed and more than 80 injured across the city. Damage was recorded in every district of Kyiv, including Obolonskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Dniprovskyi, Holosiivskyi, Solomianskyi, and Pecherskyi. At least 7 multi-story residential buildings were damaged. The attack came in retaliation for Ukraine's May 22 drone strike on the Starobilsk college dormitory (used as Russian troop billets) that killed 21 and wounded 42. Putin had personally ordered retaliation after calling the Starobilsk strike a 'monstrous crime.' The scale of the May 24 attack — combining Shahed swarm tactics with mass missile salvos — represented a major escalation in Russia's campaign to terrorize the Ukrainian capital. The Russian General Staff claimed targeting of Ukrainian military infrastructure, but civilian casualties and damage to residential areas across all Kyiv districts demonstrated the indiscriminate nature of the bombardment.
