ISW: Russia's Daily Advance Rate Collapses Two-Thirds Year-on-Year — Net Territorial Loss in April 2026; Ukraine 'May Have Turned the Tide'

| Ukraine

On May 8, 2026, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) published a major assessment finding that Russia suffered a net territorial loss of 116 square kilometers in April 2026 — the first month of net Russian territorial loss since late 2022. Russia's daily advance rate fell from 9.76 sq km/day in early 2025 to just 2.9 sq km/day in early 2026, a decline of more than two-thirds year-on-year. ISW assessed that Ukraine 'may have turned the tide' of Russian territorial gains, attributing the shift to: Ukraine's successful deep-strike campaign destroying Russian ammunition depots and logistics; improved Ukrainian fortifications; continued attrition of Russian assault forces at rates exceeding Russian recruitment capacity; and growing Ukrainian air defense proficiency. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov reported that 35,203 Russian soldiers were eliminated or seriously wounded in April 2026 alone — exceeding Russian recruitment capacity for the fifth consecutive month. Russia maintained higher operational tempo (total combat engagements) to compensate for reduced territorial gains. The assessment challenged widespread pessimism about Ukraine's long-term prospects and provided the strongest quantitative evidence to date that Russia's offensive momentum had peaked.
