Council of Europe Gives Turkey Until October 14 to Detail Steps on Kavala's Release

The Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers, meeting in Strasbourg on September 15–16, gave Turkey until October 14 to report concrete steps taken or planned toward releasing jailed philanthropist Osman Kavala, imprisoned since 2017. The request follows an August 25 European Court of Human Rights Grand Chamber ruling that Turkey must release Kavala 'at the earliest possible date' and eliminate all consequences of his conviction; the committee called the prosecution 'flagrantly unjust and politically motivated' and noted Turkey has defied three prior ECtHR judgments in the case.
