AKP Deputy Chair Says Parliament Could Vote to Enable Another Erdoğan Candidacy
At the AKP's 'Century of Turkey Meetings' in Sakarya, AKP parliamentary group deputy chair Abdulhamit Gül said 'there is broad agreement among the public that our president should remain in office and continue to provide strong leadership for Turkey,' adding the party believes 'this expectation of our people for our president to run again and be elected president will be fulfilled' through 'a decision to be taken by our parliament.' The remarks — without naming a date — reinforce the constitutional mechanism under Article 116, by which a president in his second term regains eligibility if parliament calls early elections, and follow President Erdoğan's September 11 reference to 'approaching elections' in Güneysu.
