Turkish Court Orders X to Block İmamoğlu's Presidential Candidacy Account
X said on August 4, 2026 that it was complying with an Istanbul court order to restrict access inside Turkey to the presidential candidacy office account of jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu — which had roughly 225,700 followers — while simultaneously challenging the order in court. The order cited "national security and public order." X said it disagreed with the ruling and had begun legal proceedings, arguing Turkish authorities were requiring it to block content in Turkey that remains visible everywhere else. It follows the May 2025 blocking of İmamoğlu's main personal account, which had nearly 10 million followers. İmamoğlu has been jailed since March 19, 2025 and remains on trial alongside more than 400 co-defendants in a sprawling corruption and terrorism case he calls politically motivated.
