GOP Rep. Salazar Breaks With Trump, Says Immigration Enforcement Has 'Gone Too Far'

Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a Miami Republican in a competitive re-election race, released a campaign ad Thursday, September 17, 2026, saying 'Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far,' and warning that 'the same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today.' Salazar cited data that in July, 50% of the roughly 50,000 people ICE detained had no criminal record, and cautioned Trump to 'be careful what your immigration advisers are telling you.' The ad marks one of the most direct public breaks by a sitting Trump-endorsed Republican on the administration's signature issue ahead of the midterms, in a district with a large Cuban-American and Hispanic electorate. Trump has previously backed primary challengers against Republicans who cross him.
