DOGE Formally Disbanded: Elon Musk's Government Contract Expires; Functions Absorbed by OPM

| Trump 45 & 47

Elon Musk's contract as a Special Government Employee (SGE) formally expired on May 30, 2026, effectively ending his official role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). OPM Director Charles Ezell stated that 'DOGE doesn't exist' as a centralized entity anymore — its functions were absorbed into the Office of Personnel Management and individual federal agencies. DOGE claimed $214–215 billion in government savings over its operating period; however, multiple independent analyses — including the Cato Institute and GAO — found the figures were substantially overstated, with double-counting and speculative future savings included. Federal expenditures rose year-over-year per the Treasury. Mass firings of federal workers were repeatedly blocked by courts. The IRS projects approximately $500 billion in lost tax revenue from reduced enforcement capacity. The Cato Institute found 'no noticeable effect on the trajectory of spending.' Musk had already reduced his DOGE involvement since April 1, returning focus to Tesla (Q1 profit fell 71%) and SpaceX. Trump stated he was 'confident' DOGE would cull $1 trillion in savings over time.
