Ammunition Depot Explosion Kills 11 Syrian Soldiers Near Deir ez-Zor

| Syria

An explosion tore through a Syrian Arab Army ammunition depot in Ayyash, in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor province, killing 11 soldiers and wounding 9 others; the Ministry of Defence said personnel were transporting heavy ammunition at the site when the blast occurred. The Defence Ministry held a funeral procession in Deir ez-Zor city on September 19, 2026. The cause has not been determined and an investigation is under way. It was the third Syrian arms-depot explosion in September 2026 alone, following blasts in Binnish, Idlib (Sept 1, 5 killed) and Sarmada, Idlib (Sept 9, 14 killed) — part of a Reuters tally of at least 16 similar explosions at Syrian military storage sites since Bashar al-Assad's December 2024 ouster.
