Renewed Suwayda Clashes Near Mazraa Kill National Guard Fighter, Wound Security Personnel

| Syria

Fighting erupted overnight into September 1, 2026 around Mazraa, roughly 12 kilometers northwest of Sweida city, before spreading across the province's western and northern countryside, including the Tal al-Hadid and Walgha axis. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported one National Guard fighter killed and around 10 Interior Ministry security personnel wounded. The National Guard, a Druze militia loyal to Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, accused government forces of firing mortar shells and 23mm machine guns indiscriminately toward civilian areas. The clashes are the latest in a recurring cycle of violence between Damascus-aligned security forces and Druze factions resisting integration into state institutions.
