Colorado Confirms Fourth Reproducing Gray Wolf Pack of 2026

Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirmed a newly established wolf family group, the Piney Ridge Pack, in Eagle County — the fourth confirmed reproducing pack in the state in 2026, joining the One Ear, Three Creeks, and Copper Creek packs. All four packs successfully reproduced this year, with wolf litters typically averaging four to six pups, though exact counts are difficult to confirm since pups remain hidden in dens through their earliest weeks. Between April 2025 and March 2026, Colorado recorded 10 wolf deaths, but only three affected established pack members versus seven dispersing lone wolves — evidence that pack formation improves both adult survival and reproductive success. Established territories also let wildlife managers better target conflict-reduction tools like fladry, range riders, and hazing near livestock operations. CPW has paused further translocations this release season after failing to secure a new source population, and will publish full 2026 population estimates in its spring 2027 annual report.
