China Conducts Second CCG Patrol East of Taiwan Amid Japan-Philippines Maritime Talks Dispute

China dispatched Chinese Coast Guard and other PRC government vessels to patrol waters east of Taiwan on June 8, 2026 — the second such patrol (after June 1) since Manila and Tokyo announced May 28 they would begin formal talks to delimit their EEZ/continental shelf boundary, during a Marcos-Takaichi summit in Tokyo. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning had declared May 29 that the delimitation talks are 'entirely illegal and invalid,' asserting Beijing holds exclusive EEZ and continental shelf rights in the waters east of Taiwan. Taiwan's government said it would consult with Japan and the Philippines on protecting Taiwanese fishing rights in the area.
