Mohamud Tells UN General Assembly Somalia Needs 'Predictable, Sustainable' Support for AU Mission

Addressing the UN General Assembly's general debate on September 24, 2026, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called for 'predictable, sustainable support for Somalia's security transition, including adequate financing for an African Union mission in Somalia,' amid the funding crisis facing AUSSOM and UNSOS. He warned that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz had caused 'serious economic and humanitarian consequences' for import-dependent Somalia, and called for UN Security Council reform, saying 'Africa remains unrepresented in the permanent category' and urging 'meaningful representation in both categories of the council.' On climate change, he said more than 40% of the global population is vulnerable to its destructive effects, with developing nations spending disproportionate shares of GDP responding to climate impacts. Mohamud also reaffirmed Somalia's support for Palestinian statehood along 1967 borders.
