Federal Troops Repel Pre-Dawn VBIED Assault on Baidoa by Opposition-Aligned Militia and Al-Shabaab

| Somalia

Fighters loyal to former Southwest State president Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen — reportedly coordinating with Al-Shabaab elements — launched a pre-dawn assault on Somali National Army Forces (SNAF) positions in Baidoa around 5:00am local time on Monday, August 17, 2026, using vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs). Federal forces deployed heavy weapons and artillery in the city center and repelled the assault, killing at least 30 attackers and seizing weapons and vehicles. At least two civilians were killed by stray bullets and several more were wounded, with some casualties treated at a Doctors Without Borders (MSF) facility; a local elder reported roughly 10 dead overall including both fighters and civilians. Fighting continued into August 18 as federal forces drove remaining opposition fighters out of the city, which the Defence Ministry said it retained full control of. Baidoa — the Southwest State capital seized by federal forces in March 2026 after Laftagareen's resignation — hosts hundreds of thousands of IDPs and international peacekeepers, and the clash marks the fiercest fighting there since the March takeover, underscoring the unresolved fallout from Somalia's ongoing constitutional crisis over President Mohamud's term.
