Piracy Day 39/38/32 — 44 Hostages; Adan Yabal Day 45; SW State Speaker Candidate List Published; Opposition Countdown Day 19
On June 3, 2026, all 44 hostages across three vessels held by Somali pirates remained captive, entering Day 39, 38, and 32 of captivity respectively: Honour 25 (Palau-flagged fuel tanker, 17 crew including 10 Pakistanis, 4 Indonesians, 1 Indian, 1 Sri Lankan, 1 Myanmar national; Day 39 since April 25 seizure near Bandarbeyla, Puntland; crew in critical condition — families report one rice serving per day, forced to drink tank water, no medicine; $3M ransom demand unanswered), Sward (St Kitts-flagged cargo vessel, 15 crew including 13 Syrians and 2 Indians; Day 38 since April 26, Garacad anchorage; no ransom paid), and MT Eureka (Togo-flagged oil tanker, 12 crew including 8 Egyptians; Day 32 since May 2, Puntland coast; $10M ransom demand unmet; Egypt's May 25 formal demand on Somalia's Federal Government unresolved). No ransom has been paid for any vessel and no naval rescue operation has been launched. The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) maintained its 'severe' piracy threat level. EU NAVFOR Atalanta and Combined Task Force 151 counter-piracy assets remained diverted by Iran War operations in the Persian Gulf. The June 3 gunfight at Dabka Junction between government forces and former PM Khaire's security detail — and the imminent June 4 opposition protests — deepened the political paralysis preventing the Federal Government of Somalia from coordinating any counter-piracy response. Separately, the NIEBC published the official list of candidates for the Southwest State House speaker and deputy speaker positions on June 3, with the speaker election scheduled for June 4 and SW State presidential candidate registration set to open June 5 ahead of the June 10 presidential vote. Al-Shabaab continued to hold Adan Yabal, Hiiraan Region, for Day 45 — the longest uncontested insurgent town occupation since the 2022 SNA/Macawisley offensive. AFRICOM's confirmed airstrike count in Somalia remained at 63+ since May 7, 2026 (PR #36471), as the US AFRICOM public affairs apparatus issued no new Somalia press releases.
