UNICEF Executive Director Russell in Somalia: 'All Warning Signs Are Flashing Red'
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell visited Dollow in the Gedo region and Mogadishu IDP settlements, issuing a stark emergency warning that Somalia's humanitarian crisis is catastrophically worsening. As of March 2026, 6.5 million people — roughly one in three Somalis — face IPC Phase 3 or above (Crisis or worse) food insecurity, up 1.7 million since January. Approximately 2 million are in IPC Phase 4 Emergency conditions. Around 1.84 million children under five are projected to face acute malnutrition in 2026, with approximately 500,000 expected to be severely acutely malnourished. The 2025 Deyr cereal harvest (Oct–Dec) was 83% below the 30-year average — the worst in three decades. Russell called for urgent global support: UNICEF is appealing for $121 million in 2026 and had received less than $20 million to that date. The total Somalia 2026 humanitarian requirement stands at $852 million. Some 400+ health and nutrition facilities have closed in the past year due to funding cuts.
