El Mayo's Daughter Mónica Zambada Briefly Detained in Culiacán, Then Released

| Sinaloa Split

During the March 19 Navy operations in the El Salado district of Culiacán, Mexican authorities briefly detained Mónica Zambada Niebla, daughter of imprisoned Sinaloa Cartel co-founder Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, along with a minor. Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch stated she was held to verify outstanding warrants and ensure safety, not arrested. Authorities found no active warrants against her in Mexico or the US and released her. She subsequently obtained a court injunction (amparo) from Judge Mariana Aramburo Rojo prohibiting future detention or deportation without a warrant. Controversy persists as Mónica remains on the US Treasury OFAC sanctions list for alleged money laundering on behalf of her father.
