Trump pledges $1B security package, 'Plan Colombia 2.0'

Following the earthquake and De la Espriella's request for expanded joint operations, Trump announced a $1 billion security assistance package for Colombia, quickly dubbed 'Plan Colombia 2.0' by observers. Sanctions imposed on outgoing president Gustavo Petro, his wife, son, and interior minister by the US Treasury's OFAC in October 2025 over alleged drug-trade links remained in force even as Washington rebuilt military cooperation with the new government.
