Day 688 — Sheinbaum and Canada's Carney Discuss Renewing USMCA "As Soon As Possible"

| Sheinbaum (2024–)

On August 20, 2026 (Day 688), President Sheinbaum held a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney focused on North American trade. The two agreed on the importance of renewing the USMCA/T-MEC as soon as possible to give businesses and workers greater certainty, and discussed progress on Canada-Mexico cross-border trade. Carney thanked Sheinbaum for Mexico's deployment of more than 400 firefighters and support personnel to help combat wildfires in Canada over the summer. The call came roughly 50 days after the U.S. announced it would not renew USMCA in its current form, and ahead of a Round 4 USMCA session planned for Washington in September.
