Day 667 — Q2 2026 GDP Grows 2.1% Annually, Strongest Quarterly Rebound Since Late 2020, Boosted by World Cup Spending

| Sheinbaum (2024–)

On July 30, 2026 (Day 667, Thursday), INEGI released preliminary Q2 2026 GDP data showing the Mexican economy grew 2.1% year-on-year, a sharp rebound from the 0.4% annual expansion recorded in Q1 2026. On a seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP rose 1.5%, reversing Q1's 0.6% contraction and marking the strongest quarterly expansion since Q4 2020. All three broad sectors improved versus Q1: services rose 1.5% QoQ (from -0.4%), industry rose 1.6% QoQ (from -1.0%), and the primary sector jumped 3.3% QoQ (from -1.7%) on a sharp agricultural rebound. Analysts attributed part of the rebound to a surge in consumer and tourism spending tied to Mexico hosting 16 FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in June and July, alongside resilient domestic consumption. Economy officials said the results kept the government's 1.5% full-year 2026 growth target within reach provided the second half of the year did not see a renewed contraction, even as private-sector forecasters (OECD, Citi, IMF) maintained more cautious full-year estimates in the 0.8–1.6% range reflecting continued uncertainty from the unresolved USMCA review and U.S. tariff exposure.
