Day 610 — Sheinbaum Declines Direct Meeting with CNTE; Delegates to SEGOB and SEP; CNTE Threatens to Leave Dialogue

| Sheinbaum (2024–)

At her June 3, 2026 (Day 610) mañanera, President Sheinbaum declared it was 'not pertinent' for her to hold a direct meeting with CNTE leadership, leaving negotiations exclusively in the hands of Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez (SEGOB) and Education Secretary Mario Delgado (SEP). Sheinbaum said 'We are not Díaz Ordaz' — invoking the president who ordered the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre of student protesters — to indicate the government would not resort to repression against the striking teachers, while simultaneously refusing their core demand of a presidential audience. CNTE leaders responded by warning they would abandon the existing SEGOB dialogue table entirely if Sheinbaum did not agree to a direct meeting with the striking sections. According to Proceso, CNTE national coordinator representatives stated: 'Without a guarantee of a direct meeting with the President, there is no point in continuing to dialogue with her subordinates.' The CNTE's four core demands remained unchanged: abrogation of the 2007 ISSSTE pension law; a 100% salary increase (vs. the government's offered 9% raise announced May 15); elimination of the teacher evaluation/dismissal system; and direct teacher hiring without examinations. Sheinbaum also accused the CNTE of staging 'provocations' aimed at disrupting the FIFA World Cup 2026, which opens June 11 at Estadio Azteca.
