Day 592 — Sheinbaum Breaks Ground on Tren Maya Cargo Freight Extension at Puerto Progreso; 26,200 Jobs Projected; Hospital General Naval Inaugurated
On May 16, 2026 (Day 592), President Claudia Sheinbaum visited Puerto Progreso in Yucatán as part of a two-day presidential working tour of the Yucatan Peninsula (May 15–17). At Puerto Progreso, Sheinbaum conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for the Multimodal Cargo Terminal of Progreso — the freight extension of the Tren Maya rail network. Key details: (1) TREN MAYA CARGO: The cargo rail service will connect Puerto Progreso's deep-water port to the Tren Maya network, enabling industrial and commercial freight transport across the peninsula. Construction is planned in two stages over approximately 2.5 years. Cargo service on the Tren Maya is targeted to begin in early 2027. The project is expected to generate approximately 26,200 direct jobs. (2) PORT EXPANSION: Sheinbaum also oversaw the next phase of Puerto Progreso's deep-water port expansion — a long-planned strategic infrastructure project to increase Yucatan's role as a Gulf freight hub ahead of the FIFA World Cup. (3) HOSPITAL GENERAL NAVAL: At the same site visit, Sheinbaum inaugurated the new Hospital General Naval in Yucalpetén, Progreso, adding healthcare capacity to the peninsula. (4) YUCATAN COORDINATION: Sheinbaum was accompanied by Yucatán Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena throughout the visit. Background: The Tren Maya passenger service launched under AMLO; the freight extension into Puerto Progreso represents the Sheinbaum administration's major economic use of the infrastructure. The project integrates with Plan México's nearshoring strategy by improving peninsular supply-chain connectivity.
