Mexico Continues Backing Bachelet for UN Secretary-General Post

President Sheinbaum reaffirmed Mexico's support for former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet's candidacy for UN Secretary-General, even as Chile withdrew its own support the previous day. 'We believe that Bachelet is the ideal person to lead the United Nations, and we will continue to support her,' Sheinbaum told her daily press conference. Bachelet served as Chile's first female head of state, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2018–2022, and Executive Director of UN Women from 2010–2013. She is among the main candidates to succeed Secretary-General António Guterres.
