Historic First Popular Election for Supreme Court Justices and Federal Judges
Mexico held the world's first popular election for Supreme Court justices, Electoral Tribunal magistrates, and approximately half of all circuit and district judges — 2,681 judicial posts in total. Voter turnout was only 13%, a record low for any federal election in Mexican history. More than 20% of ballots were left blank or spoiled, signaling widespread public ambivalence about the judicial overhaul.
