Ambush on Niger Army Detachment, Bankilaré–Téra Axis, Tillabéri Region — Casualties Heavily Disputed
A Niger Armed Forces liaison detachment was ambushed near Doungouro village on the Bankilaré–Téra road in western Tillabéri Region on July 17, 2026 — contested ground between ISSP/ISGS and JNIM. Niger's Ministry of Defence's official figure: 16 soldiers killed, 23 wounded (9 severe, evacuated to Niamey Armed Forces Hospital), with 15 attackers 'neutralized' and several motorcycles recovered/destroyed. RFI's unofficial reporting, relayed via regional outlets, put the toll far higher — at least 47 soldiers killed including the unit commander, with 50+ wounded — suggesting the real toll substantially exceeded the official count. Attacker identity was not officially confirmed. The African Union Commission condemned the attack the following day (July 18), expressing concern over the 'resurgence of terrorist attacks across the Sahel' and reaffirming solidarity with Niger.
